The Challenge: Preserving a Legacy Under Lake Michigan’s Harsh Conditions

This Kenilworth home, located just 200 yards from Lake Michigan, had endured more than 50 years of intense lake-effect weather. The original natural slate roof, while beautiful, had become brittle over time. Harsh winters, salt air, and seasonal storms had gradually compromised the system, leaving the home vulnerable to leaks and deterioration.

As a Kenilworth roofing company specializing in slate and copper systems, our goal was clear: preserve the home’s historic character while dramatically upgrading its durability and performance. The scope required replacing the original slate, rebuilding the in-line copper gutters, and refabricating every decorative and functional copper element by hand.

Craftsmanship Meets Engineering Precision

Our team began by removing the aging slate and damaged copper with careful precision to protect the structure beneath. We then installed new Vermont natural slate — chosen for its strength, uniform texture, and elegant gray tone that complements Kenilworth’s architectural heritage.

Every copper detail was rebuilt from the ground up. The original in-line gutters were reconstructed using a three-piece fabrication method, reinforced with custom straps, welded seams, and precision alignment to ensure a watertight system.

Dormers were upgraded with 20-ounce copper, replacing the original 16-ounce material for greater impact resistance against hail and snow. All copper boxes and downspouts were also replaced, creating a unified, weatherproof system that highlights both form and function.
