Custom Copper Flashing Installation for Premium Homes

Flashing is the most overlooked component of any roofing system, and the one most likely to cause problems when it fails. At every roof valley, chimney, dormer, wall junction, and penetration point, flashing is the barrier between your home and water intrusion. Wolf Development fabricates and installs custom copper flashing for premium homes across the Chicago suburbs and North Shore, delivering leak-proof protection that lasts as long as the roof itself.

Why Copper Flashing, Not Aluminum or Galvanized Steel

Most roofing contractors default to aluminum or galvanized steel flashing because it is cheaper and easier to work with. On a standard roof, that is a reasonable choice. On a premium home with a 50-year or 100-year roofing material, it creates a mismatch that will cost you money down the road.

Aluminum flashing corrodes when it contacts dissimilar metals or alkaline materials like mortar and concrete. Galvanized steel eventually rusts, especially in Chicagoland’s wet climate with road salt exposure and freeze-thaw cycling. Both materials typically last 20 to 30 years before they need replacement, which means you may need to tear into a perfectly good slate or synthetic roof just to replace failing flashing underneath.

Copper does not share these limitations. It resists corrosion naturally, forming a protective patina that actually strengthens over time. Copper flashing installed correctly will outlast nearly any roofing material it is paired with. On a natural slate roof with a 100-year lifespan, copper is the only flashing material that will not need replacement before the slate does.

Beyond longevity, copper adds a visual element that cheaper metals cannot replicate. The warm tone of new copper transitions gradually to a distinguished verde patina that complements slate, cedar, and synthetic roofing materials. On premium Chicagoland homes, copper flashing and roof accents are a mark of quality that is visible from the street.

How Wolf Development Fabricates and Installs Copper Flashing

We do not order pre-formed copper flashing from a catalog. Every piece is measured on site, cut from sheet copper, and hand-formed to fit your roof’s specific geometry. This is the only way to achieve tight, sealant-free joints that rely on mechanical fit rather than caulk for their waterproofing integrity.

On-Site Measurement and Templating

Before any copper is cut, we template every flashing location. Chimneys are rarely perfectly square. Roof pitches vary. Wall surfaces are not always plumb. Templating accounts for these real-world conditions so the finished flashing sits flush and drains properly.

Hand Forming and Soldering

Our crew forms copper flashing using brakes and hand tools to achieve precise bends and profiles. Where pieces need to join, we use soldered seams rather than overlaps with sealant. Soldered copper joints are watertight and permanent. They will not separate as sealant ages and shrinks.

Integration with Roofing Materials

Copper flashing is installed as the roofing material goes down, woven into the courses rather than applied on top after the fact. This integration is what makes flashing work. Surface-applied flashing that sits on top of finished roofing relies entirely on sealant, and sealant always fails eventually.

The Wolf Development Promise

Pairing Copper Flashing with Your Roofing Material

Copper flashing pairs naturally with every premium roofing material Wolf Development installs.

On natural slate roofs, copper is the standard. Slate and copper have been installed together for centuries because both materials share a lifespan measured in generations. The combination is historically accurate and functionally superior.

On DaVinci and Brava synthetic shake and slate, copper flashing and accents elevate the finished appearance while providing the same long-term protection. Synthetic roofing products are designed for 50-plus year service life, and copper is one of the few flashing materials that will keep pace.

On cedar shake, copper valleys and chimney flashings resist the tannin-related corrosion that attacks aluminum in contact with cedar. If you are planning a cedar shake project or replacing an existing cedar roof, copper flashing eliminates the galvanic corrosion risk that comes with mixing metals and organic materials.

On metal roofing systems, copper flashing at transitions and penetrations creates a cohesive metal-on-metal aesthetic while avoiding the dissimilar-metal corrosion issues that arise when copper contacts steel or aluminum directly. Proper isolation techniques are part of every installation.

Your Copper Questions, Answered

Everything you need to know about working with Wolf Development.

Why choose copper flashing over aluminum or galvanized steel?

Copper resists corrosion naturally and develops a protective patina that strengthens over time. Aluminum corrodes when it contacts dissimilar metals or alkaline materials, and galvanized steel eventually rusts. On a premium roof with a 50-year or 100-year lifespan, copper is the only flashing material that will not need replacement before the roofing material itself.

Does copper flashing turn green?

Yes. Copper develops a verde patina over time as it oxidizes. This patina is a protective layer that actually extends the material's lifespan. Most homeowners on the North Shore consider the patina a desirable aesthetic quality, especially on slate and cedar shake roofs.

Can you add copper flashing to an existing roof without a full replacement?

In some cases, yes. If the existing roofing material is in good condition and can be carefully lifted to weave in new flashing, we can replace deteriorated aluminum or steel flashing with copper. However, the best results come from installing copper flashing during a new roof installation, when it can be fully integrated into the roofing courses.

Is copper flashing worth the added cost?

For premium roofing materials with long lifespans, copper flashing eliminates the risk of having to tear into a sound roof to replace cheaper flashing that failed early. On a natural slate or synthetic slate roof, the long-term cost of copper flashing is lower than the cost of two or three aluminum flashing replacements over the same period.

Do you fabricate copper flashing on site?

Yes. Every piece of copper flashing we install is measured, cut, and hand-formed on site to fit your roof's exact geometry. We do not use pre-bent stock pieces. On-site fabrication produces tighter joints that rely on mechanical fit and soldered seams rather than sealant for waterproofing.
